IN PRAISE OF SOLOISTS
What's the collective noun for soloists?
Whatever it is, we have them this year in the Newcastle Music Festival,
the young, the restless... the bold, beautiful...
Newcastle is thrilled to welcome Małgorzata Wiśniewska to our city. With a voice that “chimes like a delicate bell” and a “joyful, pleasant stage presence”, soprano Małgorzata has enchanted audiences throughout her native Poland and across Europe. You can enjoy Małgorzata's lovely voice in Death by Opera and Opera Cocktails!
Opera Cocktails is presented by Dr Bruce Caldwell.
Death by Opera is supported by Photolook.
Martin Buckingham is an accomplished and dramatic tenor, who has worked with Opera Australia recently as a principal artist on their productions of Die Meistersinger, Wozzeck, Salome, Turandot and the national tour of Madama Butterfly. He has also ventured into directing, having produced productions of La Bohéme, Tosca, Mozart and Salieri and Lucia di Lammermoor to critical acclaim. Martin is the current Artistic Director of Opera Van Diemensland. Treat yourself to Martin's voice in Opera Soiree and Opera Cocktails.
Opera Cocktails is presented by Dr Bruce Caldwell. The appearance of the artists in Opera Soiree is supported by Hunter and Coastal Lifestyle Magazine.
It wouldn't be Newcastle Music Festival without Deborah Humble. Deborah joins the Festival Strings to perform in the Festival Finale, celebrating everything great about the Festival as she joins the Christ Church Camerata, our resident orchestra, and the great community orchestra, Festival Strings, for the first time.
The Festival Finale is presented by NBN News.
Flautist extraordinaire Sally Walker appears twice in the festival - in Twilight Musical Dialogues and with the Newcastle University Choir. With a performance record as long as the instrument she plays, Sally is indeed Australian musical royalty.
Genevieve Dickson captivated the audience in the Deborah Humble Masterclass last year, and this year joins the Festival as soloist in her own concert: The Poet, the Music and the Muse with Ross Fiddes on piano. A fascinating feature of this concert is that Genevieve performs songs by a writer best known for her Australian novels; My Brilliant Career, The Getting of Wisdom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony: Henry Handel Richardson, whose real name was Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson.
The appearance of Genevieve Dickson is supported by Dr Roland Hicks.
Do you love the the sultry tangos of Astor Piazolla? Hear them and more at Nocturna at Adamstown Uniting Church, and stick around for Shades of Sax Blue playing jazz later. Soloist in Nocturna is the brilliant Daniel Rojas, a Chilean-born Australian concert pianist and composer who specialises in the rich and vibrant Latin American musical aesthetic. Rojas brings together music from diverse indigenous, folk and popular Latin American traditions and rearranges them for the concert stage. Daniel appears with Daniel Wallace-Crabbe on bandoneon.
The appearance of the artists is supported by Hunter Heart.
Soprano Sarah Dockrill is a Novocastrian opera singer who is currently an Adjunct Artist with Pacific Opera in Sydney. This year Sarah was the winner of the Cantorian Singing Competition and runner up at the Taree Eisteddfod Aria Final. You can hear Sarah in Opera Soiree with Genevieve Dickson and Martin Buckingham as you enjoy bubbles and high tea!

Miriam Allan, our internationally known Festival star, makes four appearances, three as soloist this year. In Twilight Musical Dialogues: Musical Kin, Father and Daughter with Sally Walker and Chris Allan; with The Muffat Collective in Sweeter than Roses, a Purcell feast; and with the Festival Choir in Concert. Book the lot - you won't want to miss any of these magical moments of song.
The Festival Choir in Concert is presented by City of Newcastle. Miriam's appearance in Sweeter than Roses is supported by Brokenwood Wines, and her appearance in Festival Choir in Concert is supported by Lexus of Newcastle.
Maria Raspopova, concert pianist and co-artistic director of the Omega Ensemble graces our Festival this year as a solo pianist - “Raspopova played with confidence and zest. She shone like gold…” (Cut Common Magazine). You can bask in the glow of her performance of Chopin's works on the Stuart and Sons piano at Newcastle Art Gallery on Wednesday 14 August at 7.30pm. The fabulous Chris Allan appears several times in this year's Festival, as conductor, pianist, and singer! His beautiful baritone will be on display in Death by Opera as he and a bevy of tragic heroines explore the sad end of several leading ladies of opera. Join us on July 30 for this fun event! Oh, and your ticket includes a two course meal and drink on arrival at Foghorn Brewery.

We all know David Banney as a conductor, violist with Christ Church Camerata Quartet, and co-artistic director of the Festival, but did you also know David is a very fine singer? He struts his stuff as the Doctor, lamenting over the dying Violetta in the poignant death scene from La Traviata in our Festival prequel Death by Opera on July 30. Come and mourn with us while you tuck into a two course meal at Foghorn Brewery! Photo credit Brett Boardman.

The frequently invisible Peter Guy, Newcastle's fine organist, will be on display with the biggest instrument of all - the grand pipe organ of Christ Church Cathedral, in his solo concert Vive La France! on Wednesday August 14 at 12.30. Enjoy some French food before the concert, which features what some believe is the greatest organ piece of all time - Widor's Symphony. Check it out here if you don't know it, or are not sure if you remember it. Then book your ticket.
The appearance of Peter Guy is supported by Hunter District Organ Music Society.
The inimitable Heather Price has already SOLD OUT at one of her four concerts this year. We hope you got your tickets to Italian Soul at The Umbrian because it is SOLD OUT. If you are lucky, you can still book to see Heather in Swing Swing Swingwhen she sings and plays with the Dungeon Big Band. Or enjoy the artistic surrounds of Maitland Regional Art Gallery when Heather plays with Terence Koo in Landscape of Music at MRAG. Or catch her in classical mode in the Festival Finale, as guest double bass player, harking back to her classical past. How lucky is Newcastle that Heather calls our city home.
