New additions to the Manning Winter Festival program in June will provide some very creative entertainment. Over a number of years spectacular “Flash Mob” performances have gained huge popularity around the world. Performers of many kinds spontaneously “pop up” in public places and demonstrate their skills to delight their audiences. Taree will be no exception mid -morning on Saturday 4 June when Mid North Coast Bootscooters will create magic for shoppers and staff at the Manning Mall and Taree Central shopping centres. “This is a first for the Manning Valley and something we hope will be continued by others in time to come,” said Manning Winter Festival President Mave Richardson. “It is a wonderful concept which highlights our vast local talent and celebrates our community,” she added. Other “Flash Mob” performances at the two shopping centres will occur mid-morning on Saturday 11 June. This time dancers from the Andrea Rowsell Academy of Dance will be capturing the attention of the shopping public. Event coordinator, Janeece Richards, has nothing but praise for the enthusiastic support she has received. “Managers of both shopping centres and both sets of performers were delighted to participate. It has been a great pleasure to work with them,” she said. The Mid North Coast Bootscooters Line Dancing group was established 22 years ago. They dance to a wide variety of music, no longer only country music. With more than 100 members they warmly welcome new members – beginners or not. For more information visit their website: www. midnorthcoastbootscooters.weebly.com The Andrea Rowsell Academy of Dance began in 2004. With an extensive teaching and performing background in Australia and overseas, Andrea is looking forward to the coming “Flash Mob” performances. “Opportunities for the students to be involved in local community events like these are important. The students are excited about bringing some fun and entertainment to the venues and are enjoying learning and rehearsing their piece for the festival,” she said. “Flash Mob” performances should always come as a surprise so details cannot be announced in advance. A major highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Jonathan Billingham`s composition, “From Hidden Valleys to the Open Sea.” The work will be performed by the Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble. Now living in Sydney, Jonathan is a talented musician and composer from the Manning Valley. He was especially commissioned by the festival committee to compose a work which would reflect the beauty of our valley. Jonathan showed great artistic promise when he began learning to play the violin when he was only four and a half years old. He attributes much of his success to the skills of his local piano and music teachers – Juen Van Hand, Margery Bonsor, Don Secomb and Pam Archer. “Not every country town or regional centre offers the range of opportunities for young people to participate in the performing arts as is the case in Taree,” he said. “This is because of the dedicated teachers and volunteers who work tirelessly in the community to perpetuate a creative culture in the region,” he added. Jonathan graduated with a Bachelor of Music [Hons.] from the University of NSW in 2009. He majored in composition and also developed a passion for choral singing. For the past ten years he has performed many of his own compositions in Sydney and in Taree. Together with his wife Linda Billingham, Jonathan produces concerts under the umbrella of their business, “Tallowdale Music.” I addition to his musical career, Jonathan is the Public Relations and Systems Manager for New College at the University of NSW. “I enjoy the challenges of managing and marketing the systems which support the 565 resident students at New College,” he said. He still thinks of the Manning Valley as home and often visits to spend time with family. Other features of the festival opening night include the presentation of the 2016 Visual and Performing Arts Awards and the announcement of the 2016 Manning Winter Festival Ambassador. Refreshments provided. Tickets at $15pp are now on sale at Movies, Games and More, 208 Victoria Street, Taree. Ph: 65525699.
